Social Impact Heroes Helping Our Planet: Why & How Emily Neville Of ‘Beer to Bags’ Is Helping To Change Our World

As part of my series about “individuals and organizations making an important social impact,” I had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Neville.

Emily Neville, a North Carolina native, is on a mission to transform spent malt bags typically thrown away during the brewing process into unique upcycled products. Emily founded Beer to Bags originally as a sub-brand of her first company, Reborn, which she started as a sophomore at North Carolina State University. Since realizing the environmental impact of millions of these durable bags entering our landfills annually after a single use, Emily dedicates her time to solving this problem in a fascinating way that benefits malt suppliers, breweries, and beer lovers alike.

You are currently leading a social impact organization that is making a difference for our planet. Can you tell us a bit about what you and your organization are trying to change in our world today?

Every year, millions of spent malt bags are discarded during the brewing process. Malted grain is one of the four main ingredients of beer. The malt is transported to breweries from the malt suppliers in 50–55 lb. polypropylene bags that are difficult to recycle. We receive these bags and transform them into unique products that reenter the economy.
